CONNECTION TROUBLESHOOTING

Check your broadband filters

Use this when a trusted site or app appears to be blocked on your home connection. Filters are one possible cause; changing them is not a guaranteed fix for buffering or slow speeds.

Provider pages checked: 7 October 2026. Account screens and available features can change.

Before changing anything

  1. Run Fire VT → Settings → Speed Test → Run Speed Test. Save the result and note the time.
  2. Check another app on the same device. If possible, briefly compare another network, keeping mobile-data use in mind. This can narrow the cause but does not prove a filter or ISP block.
  3. Look for a provider block message, content-control rule or security alert. If there is no evidence of filtering, start with the connection guide.
  4. Record the original setting. If you choose a temporary test, change one relevant control, allow the provider’s stated time, retry the same item and restore the setting afterwards.
  5. If access changes, tell Davie and your provider what setting affected it. Ask the provider to review incorrect classifications; do not automatically leave protection switched off.

Virgin Media — Essential Security

The supplied Virgin Media article is current and includes instructions for managing Essential Security. Sign in to My Virgin Media → Account Settings → Online Security. Review parental/content settings first. If you need a temporary Essential Security test, record the original setting, switch it off, retry once, then restore it. This feature includes protection against malicious sites, so disabling it affects more than content filtering.

Sky — Broadband Shield

Use the official Broadband Shield help page and sign in with the account holder’s Sky ID to review filtering. The public page loads, but its detailed controls were not exposed to our checking tool, so this guide does not promise an exact current menu path. Use Sky’s current account instructions to adjust an allowed site or filter setting. Contact Sky if a site is wrongly classified. The third-party Techxpert page has been replaced with official help.

BT — Parental Controls; Smart Setup is separate

For filtering, sign in to My BT → My Extras → Parental Controls → Personalise your settings. For a temporary test, move the Parental Controls slider to Off; BT says this can take up to 10 minutes. Switch it back On afterwards to restore your saved settings. Do not delete the settings just to test. Smart Setup is an onboarding wizard, not a content filter. Only troubleshoot it if a setup page is interrupting a newly connected device. On supported hubs, connect to your own hub, type 192.168.1.254 in a browser, enter the hub admin password, open Smart Setup, choose Off and Save. The original Smart Setup URL returned 404; use the replacement below.

Vodafone — Broadband controls / Secure Net Home

The supplied Controls & Limits URL redirects to an adult-content help page that primarily describes mobile-network controls. A mobile adult-content bar is not a universal home Wi-Fi fix. If you have Secure Net Home, open My Vodafone, select the Secure Net Home account and choose Children to review profiles, assigned devices and content controls. Use the settings for the affected device or profile. If your broadband uses another control system, ask Vodafone which controls apply to your plan; do not follow an old mobile menu as a broadband instruction.

Plusnet — SafeGuard

Plusnet’s official indexed guidance still names SafeGuard and says it is managed through the SafeGuard control panel in My Account, with an ON/OFF button at the top. The supplied page returned a temporary 503 error during direct checks, although current official search results were available. Review an allowed-site or category setting first. If testing Off, record your settings and restore protection afterwards. Check the provider’s current instructions for how long changes take; if the page will not load, ask Plusnet for help.

TalkTalk — HomeSafe

The original link redirects to TalkTalk’s new official help centre. HomeSafe includes separate Kids Safe, Homework Time, Virus Alerts and Scam Protection features. Sign in to My Account to review them. Check the relevant content category or schedule before changing security protections. The overview loads, but its older “How to use” link redirects to a notice that the community has closed; use the new help centre or contact TalkTalk if your account menus differ.

EE — Parental Controls and Web Protect

EE’s original Web Protect link works, but Web Protect / Advanced Web Protect concerns malicious sites and security threats; parental controls are a separate feature. For content filtering, open the EE app → WiFi Controls → Parental Controls and review the restriction level, website rules and schedules. EE lists media streaming among categories blocked at the Strict level. For a suspected security block, review Web Protect through Manage → Broadband; some hub paths use Plans and Subscriptions → Broadband. Follow the hub-specific official page. If performing a temporary off test, restore the setting afterwards. Do not override a malware warning merely to make an app work.

Optional test: turn IPv6 off where supported

If connection problems remain, you can try temporarily disabling IPv6 only where your router provides a supported IPv6 on/off setting. IPv6 is an internet addressing protocol, not a content filter. This is a diagnostic test, not a required change or a guaranteed speed improvement.

  1. Identify your exact router model and use your provider’s official guide to open its router settings or management app. The option depends on the router and firmware, not just the provider name.
  2. Look for a dedicated IPv6 setting. It may be in an Advanced, Internet, WAN or Network section; these are possible labels, not verified paths for every router. Record or photograph the original setting.
  3. If the router explicitly allows IPv6 to be disabled, switch that setting Off and save. Restart the router only if its instructions require it, and wait for your connection to return.
  4. Reconnect your device, reopen Fire VT and retry the same item. Run Settings → Speed Test → Run Speed Test again and compare the results.
  5. If there is no improvement, or another app or device loses connectivity, restore the original IPv6 setting straight away. If the test helps, tell Davie and your provider the router model and results before deciding whether to keep the change.

No IPv6 switch? Skip this step and ask your provider whether your model supports it. Do not change IPv6 address-allocation mode, DHCP, DNS, firewall settings or modem mode as a substitute: those controls are not equivalent to turning IPv6 off. The test can affect other devices using the router.

The provider pages checked did not establish a current IPv6 disable menu for every supplied router. These links help you access settings; they do not confirm that your router has an IPv6 switch.

Still having trouble?

Send Davie your provider, device model, the exact error, the in-app speed-test result and the settings you tested. Do not share your broadband account password or router admin password.
